Samsung and Toshiba challenge iPad

Samsung and Toshiba have both launched tablet computers to take on Apple’s iPad.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab weighs just 380g and has a 7-inch screen (against the Ipad’s 730g and 9.7in screen). It uses Google’s Android operating system and the company wants to sell it like subsidised mobile phone.

Toshiba’s Folio 100 weighs about twice as much at 760g, has a 10-in screen and also runs Android. Its strategy is based on a computer model selling direct to consumers, though a 3G option is available. The Folio will cost £329 in the UK.

Sony has yet to announce a tablet, but has stressed its Qriocity online service, which offers video and music, could give Apples iTunes store a run for its money.
