Men’s pioneer Arena closes

Bauer is to close Arena, pioneer of the modern day men’s lifestyle magazines. Its latest ABC sales figure was just 29,374 copies. Despite its pioneering history under Nick Logan at Wagadon, sales had slid since the 1999 sale to Emap and then since the Bauer takeover a year ago.

Arena was launched in 1986, and although For Him was already around, Arena‘s high profile paved the way for GQ three years later – now the runaway lifestyle leader – and Esquire (1991); and even lads’ mag Loaded, launched as ‘the antidote to the snooty fashion-based publications of the time’.

The closure leaves  US offshoots the ‘mass market’ end of the lifestyle sector, and gives breathing space to recent launch Buck and the more established Wonderland and Another Man.
